Qatar Chemical Company: A Leader in Petrochemical Production

Qatar Chemical Company Ltd. (Q-Chem) stands as a prominent player in the petrochemical industry, showcasing Qatar’s commitment to industrial growth and innovation. The company is a joint venture owned by Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding Company (MPHC) at 49%, Chevron Phillips Chemical International Qatar Holdings LLC at 49%, and QatarEnergy at 2%. This strategic partnership combines local expertise with global technology, creating a world-class facility for the production of polyethylene and other key chemicals.

State-of-the-Art Petrochemical Facilities

Located in Mesaieed Industrial City, Q-Chem’s primary facility began commercial operations in 2004, following an investment of over $1 billion. It produces 453,000 metric tons of polyethylene per year, including both high-density and medium-density polyethylene (HDPE & MDPE). Additionally, the company operates a 1-hexene unit, producing 47,000 metric tons annually. Q-Chem’s sophisticated technology, provided by Chevron Phillips Chemical, ensures efficient and environmentally conscious operations, with supporting infrastructure such as a sulfur recovery plant, water treatment systems, and modern dock facilities.

Q-Chem II: Expanding Horizons

The success of Qatar Chemical Company led to the development of Q-Chem II, a $2 billion expansion project situated next to the original plant. Q-Chem II significantly increased HDPE production, adding 350,000 metric tons annually, and introduced the region’s first full-range Normal Alpha Olefins (NAO) unit, capable of producing 345,000 metric tons. This expansion allows Q-Chem to meet the growing global demand for petrochemicals, particularly in Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Ras Laffan Olefins Company (RLOC)

In collaboration with Qatofin and QatarEnergy, Qatar Chemical Company II is also a key shareholder in the Ras Laffan Olefins Company (RLOC). This joint venture operates a cutting-edge ethylene cracker with a production capacity of 1.3 million metric tons annually. Ethylene produced at Ras Laffan is piped to Mesaieed, supplying Q-Chem II’s downstream operations. This facility further solidifies Qatar’s leadership in petrochemical production.

Conclusion

At Qatar Chemical Company, our vision and strategic partnerships have positioned it as a leading force in the global petrochemical industry. With advanced technology, sustainability initiatives, and a commitment to excellence, Q-Chem continues to drive industrial growth in Qatar while meeting the world’s rising demand for essential chemicals.
